Animals está basado en términos generales, en la fábula política de George Orwell, Animal Farm, donde varias castas de la sociedad están representadas a través de diferentes animales: perros como los representantes de la ley, cerdos como implacables mandatarios y ovejas como peones descerebrados. Mientras la novela se enfoca en el comunismo, el álbum es una crítica directa a la sociedad de consumo.
